Hyaluronic Acid vs Niacinamide: Which Do You Actually Need?

Both are skincare staples. They do completely different things. Here's how to decide which one (or both) belongs in your routine.

Both are in the "should everyone use this?" tier of skincare. They're not the same. They actually compliment each other. Here's how to think about it.

Hyaluronic Acid = hydration

A humectant that draws and holds 1,000x its weight in water. Plumps fine lines, hydrates dehydrated skin, gives that "dewy" look.

Choose HA if: your skin feels tight, dehydrated, or shows fine lines. Most people benefit.

Niacinamide = balance

Vitamin B3. Regulates oil, reduces redness, evens tone, strengthens the skin barrier, fades pigmentation.

Choose niacinamide if: you have visible pores, oily skin, redness, uneven tone, or post-acne marks. Most people also benefit.

The trick: use both

They layer beautifully. Apply hyaluronic acid first (water-based), then niacinamide.

The order

Cleanser → Toner → Hyaluronic Acid → Niacinamide → Treatment Serum → Moisturizer → SPF

Lightest to heaviest, watery first.

Can you overdo it?

HA: no, it's hydration. More = more dewy.

Niacinamide: above 10% can cause flushing in sensitive skin. Most formulas use 2–5% which is fine for everyone.

Bottom line

Get both. They do different things. Layered together they handle hydration, oil regulation, and barrier repair — the trifecta most skin needs.
