How to Build a Skincare Routine (Complete Beginner's Guide for Under $100)

Skincare is overwhelming. Here's the actual minimum-viable routine, in the right order, for under $100 — including which steps you can skip.

If you've spent 30 minutes scrolling skincare TikTok and ended up more confused than when you started, this is for you.

The real, minimum-viable, actually-effective skincare routine has 5 products, AM/PM combined. That's it. You don't need 11 steps. You don't need a 10-step Korean routine. You need to be consistent.

The 5 essentials, in order

1. Cleanser (AM + PM)

Removes oil, dirt, SPF, and the pollution your skin collected from existing.

  • AM: something gentle — a foam or gel
  • PM: an oil cleanser or balm to dissolve SPF and the day's grime

2. Toner (PM, optional but recommended)

Resurfaces and preps the skin for what's next. An exfoliating toner with AHA/BHA does the heavy lifting here.

3. Serum (AM and/or PM)

Your "active." Pick one based on your concern:

  • Hydration → hyaluronic acid
  • Brightening → vitamin C (AM)
  • Anti-aging → retinol (PM)
  • Pores/texture → niacinamide

4. Moisturizer (AM + PM)

Locks in everything underneath. Skip this and your skin overcompensates with oil.

5. SPF (AM, every day, no exceptions)

The single most powerful anti-aging product in existence. Wear it indoors too — blue light counts.

Order matters: lightest to heaviest

Cleanser → Toner → Serum → Moisturizer → SPF

That's the rule. Watery first, oily last. Always.

Wait between layers — but not forever

30 seconds is enough. Letting each layer absorb stops them from balling up on your skin.

A complete starter set under $100

Here's how we'd build it from scratch using PetalGlow:

StepProductPrice
Cleanser (AM)Botanical Deep Cleanse Foam$22.99
Cleanser (PM)Botanical Cleansing Balm$28.99
Toner (PM)AHA + BHA Glow Toner$29.99

That's $81.97 total — under $100, and it covers cleansing morning and night plus exfoliation at night.

Add in a basic moisturizer and an SPF and you've got the entire foundation.

What you DON'T need (yet)

  • Eye cream (your moisturizer is fine on the eye area)
  • Essences (toner does the same job)
  • Sleeping masks (heavy moisturizer = same effect)
  • Face mists (a vibe, not a need)
  • 6 different serums (pick one — actually use it for 8 weeks before judging)

The single rule that beats every product

Consistency beats expensive. Cheap products used every day for 60 days beats fancy products used twice and abandoned.

Pick a routine. Use it. Don't change anything for 8 weeks. Then judge.
